Slavic Community Center is excited to announce the launching of the new program for those who want to quit smoking! In
this article I will tell you in details about this project and how you, your family and friends can join this helpful to the
community research. I will also update you on our financial literacy program, as we are starting to conduct our first classes
for senior citizens in our community. Lastly, I will talk a little bit about our “School Navigator” project and the results that
we have achieved through out this time.
Slavic Community Center and the Wilder Research Group with the financial support from ClearWay Foundation are proud
to announce the launching of the “Tobacco Use” research project. This project is designed to help our community
members to find the right way for them to quit smoking. Through the Wilder Research Group our community will get
opportunity to participate in the research that will be followed by incentive programs for the participants of the research.
It will also provide educational classes and meeting with professionals who may be able to assist you in quitting this
unhealthy habit. We at Slavic Community Center believe that our community disserves to live a healthy life style and foster
healthy life style to our children. We know that over 80% of Russian speaking population in greater Twin Cities’ area
smoke cigarettes, and we also realize how it may harm your health, your budget, and your health insurance premiums.
The cost of cigarettes continues to increase every year, and if on average you smoke a pack a day for $4.00/ pack it
comes down to $1,460.00/year. Do you think that you could find a use for this money? How about the fact that smokers
pay on average $40.00 more for their health insurance premiums, which for a one year it’s about $480.00. If you just sum
these two numbers up, you will get $1940.00/year per smoker. What if you have two, three, four smokers in the family?
We never think about it, because we do not care to sit dawn and calculate these facts in. We do not think about the fact
where smokers are more likely to get cold that could develop in some chronic deceases, or even worth cancer. More then
50% of all cancer patients are former smokers. In our organization we are concerned about these facts, as it affects our
community member’s financial and health status in the society. The “Tobacco Use” program is designed to help our
community to get educated about health benefits on quitting the tobacco use, as well as it promotes the opportunities for
those who wants to quit and does not know where to start. As I have mentioned earlier this project is a combination of
both: research and education. Russian and American professionals in the health industries will be involved in this project,
and Slavic Community Center plays a huge role in this program. We will continue to update you on the “Tobacco Use”
project, however if you would like to be a participant and receive incentives for helping us in educating our community
please contact Gennady Meerovich or Aleksandr Yershov at 651- 690- 2395 for more information on how you, your family
and your friends can participate in this program.
