Volunteers created the Slavic Community Center. Concerned community members gathered and spent time crafting a mission and vision statement, applying for nonprofit status and designing the initial programs. Volunteers remain integral to the services delivered at SCC. Last year 51 people volunteered 853 hours of their time to work with elders, youth and families, providing critical information and support in their native tongue of Russian. This represents a savings of $15,994 for the agency.Volunteers assist with fundraising events, community and cultural celebrations, finding a specific resource for a needy family, spending time conversing with an elder, tutoring a child in math, or doing research on a program-related topic. The Board of Directors is comprised wholely of volunteers, and represent Slavic and Somali immigrants, mainstream commercial businesses and finance, nonprofit agencies, and business associations.
