Nasha Shkola’s (Our School) purpose is to improve the academic achievement of Russian-speaking children residing in the
Twin Cities, through a rigorous dual language (Russian – English) scholastic curricula that focuses on math, science, Russian
language, history and heritage, and state standards.   Nasha Shkola will create a learning environment that encourages
critical thinking and creativity, and shows students that they can create and contribute to a collective knowledge base.
Increasing students’ self-esteem, self-confidence and positive Russian cultural identity is essential in achieving the academic
success of Nasha Shkola’s students.  The school’s role goes beyond educating students in grades preK-12.  Its role is to
prepare these young ones, by grounding them in their Russian cultural heritage and worldview, and cultivating their
excitement to learn about themselves and the world in which they live, for a lifetime of learning.
The school’s mission is
to provide a quality education for students of Russian heritage and non-Russian heritage, within a safe
and secure learning environment, that is built on the foundation of rigorous academic standards, and Russian language,
values and culture
.

Nasha Shkola will improve student learning by
    1) Increasing learning opportunities for students both in and outside of the school setting;
    2) Encouraging the use of different and innovative teaching methods;
    3) Focusing on a core curriculum that emphasizes mathematics and science;
    4) Creating new professional opportunities for teachers, including the opportunity for a “teacher’s exchange” between
    the U.S. and Russia;
    5) Opportunities for both Russian and U.S.-based students to participate in a student exchange program;
    6) Teaching the students about modern Russia, its business, agricultural, technological, arts and other industries in
    support of a better understanding and relationship between the two countries;
    7) Utilizing Russian-speaking elders as classroom aides, reinforcing the language and cultural values with students;
    8) Providing classroom instruction in both Russian and English, allowing students to acquire fluency in both languages (bi-
    literacy) which in turn supports higher academic achievement and cognitive processes

The most unique characteristic of Nasha Shkola is that it is a Russian language-and culture-based school.  There are NO
Russian language preK-12 schools in the Twin Cities or anywhere in Minnesota.  Another unique twist is that the school’s
mission is to bring non- Russians into the Russian culture and community to help revitalize and sustain the Russian language
and culture in Minnesota.  It is very important to the Russian Community to take this journey together with non- Russian
families so that prejudices and misconceptions about Russian people can be eliminated.
